My Fall Must-Haves

Fall is here, and it's in full swing. Well, kind of. I live in Atlanta, which means we are currently sitting around 70-something degrees every day. For us, that's fall. Here's the thing about those of us who live in the South during fall, though. We embrace it. We really embrace it. Since we can't have the chilly temps and golden leaves, you better believe that there's a list of cozy fall must-haves a mile long for most of us to get us in the spirit.

Sure, a New Englander may be able to experience things that we won't down here in the good ol' South, it means that we (meaning I) have the most next-level fall must-haves to give us the sense that the seasons have changed even when it's still warm enough to wear a tee-shirt and ripped jeans.

So what are some of my must-have fall items to get into the PSL-drinking, leaf-throwing, spooky-reading, Practical Magic-watching season? Here's what I've got.

1. Over-Sized Sweaters

Can I swear this sweater outside right now? No, no I can't. However, that doesn't mean that I don't wear it everywhere around my house to get ultra-cozy. I have this longline cardigan from Target in a 4x to make it extra oversized on me, and it's perfect. From lounging watching movies to working on my blog, everything from the warmth to the style of this cardigan screams fall.

Target is a great resource for these kinds of pieces. Not only is it an inclusive retailer with sizes from XS-4X, but the prices are right as well. If you want a cozy fall sweater, Target is a great place to look.

2. Fall Mugs

If you want to fell all of the fall vibes, grab a mug. This may seem simple. Okay, it is simple, but that's the beauty of it. While this adorable mug from Etsy is a bit on the pricier side, retailers like Home Goods, Target, and even TJ Maxx have incredible deals on seasonal mugs that will get you into the spirit. Whether you're having your morning coffee (or your afternoon or evening coffee if you're me), tea, or hey, maybe it's wine, a fall mug is an affordable cozy way to embrace autumn.

3. Candles

Y'all, you knew this would be on the list. Everyone and their mother's cousin's girlfriend has Bath & Body Works candles during all of fall and winter. There's reasons why. First, they're almost always on sale. If you buy these candles when they are full price, STOP. The vast majority of the time, you can snag a seasonal candle for under $15, and they last forever.

Second, these candles are fragrant enough to make your entire house or apartment smell incredible. Whether you love a Christmas tree-esque Fresh Balsam or the spicy, earthy smell of the Leaves candle (my personal favorite), get thee to a Bath & Body Works.

4. Berry Lip Colors

The days of sheer lip tints, dewy glows, and light coverage are gone. Thank you, Jesus. Don't get me wrong, I do occasionally love a glass skin moment, but fall and winter mean that I don't sweat off every last bit of makeup on my face. Of course, that means I slap more of that shit on my face than ever.

One of my favorite fall makeup staples is a deep, berry lip. Now, obviously, your choice of lip color will differ from mine if you've got a deeper skin tone. One formula I'll recommend, though, is NARS Matte Velvet. These pencils have a perfect matte (duh) look without drying out your lips. While they don't have quite the staying power of a liquid lip, the comfort makes up for it. As for my favorite color, it's a dramatic one for me: Train Blue. The shade is a darkened eggplant hue, and I'm obsessed.

5. Fall Nail Colors

Essie's Fall 2019 Collection is next level. Is that really a surprise, though? Since I was a pre-teen, I've bitten my nails down to the quick, but the past three years, I've found that painting my nails prevents me from biting them down. During the different seasons, I like to switch up my hues, so I'm always on the lookout for new shades (Confession, I hate getting my nails done at a salon. All that waiting. All that awkward silence. No, thanks).

For me, the perfect fall color is this metallic green shade called Sweater Weather from Essie, and apparently, I'm not the only one who thinks so. The color is sold out on both Target and Ulta. Currently, the only place I can find it is Amazon, and the price, which is usually $9, has been upped to $15.

6.Pajamas

Plus size pajamas are a bitch to find but thank God for Rihanna. RiRi's Savage X line has a wide range of sizes and options from lingerie to pajamas. If you're not into the style, that's fine. For me, though, I'm obsessed with the animal print, and bonus, it comes in more colors!

Sure, maybe you want something covered in leaves and foxes, and I am SO down for that because any pajamas are good pajamas. The point here is that cute pjs are cute pjs, and you need a pair for fall.

7. Cozy Reads

In my opinion, there's no greater time to read than in the fall. From atmospheric novels like Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus to spooky reads like Libba Bray's The Diviners, a good book should always be on your nightstand during the chill weather. If you want some recommendations for your fall reads, head over to my round-up of spooky season books.

8. Comfy Blanket

Okay, yes, I use a blanket all year round. There's something so cozy about them that I can't not have one at all times. However, when fall comes around, I always want a new one, preferably one that's knitted and warm and the stuff that dreams are made of.

9. Soup

There had to be at least one food item on this list, so of course, it's a delicious soup. This recipe is from well-known blogger and chef Tieghan Gerard of Half Baked Harvest. If you haven't checked out her Instagram feed or recipes, you are truly missing out on some delicious food and gorgeous food aesthetics.

This fall, embrace that warm, soothing feeling of a bowl of soup, and eh, if you have to order takeout, that's fine, too.

10. Harry Potter

Finally, the most important part of fall: Harry Potter. Watch the movies, re-read the books, wear your house colors. Currently, the background on my phone is Hagrid's Hut surrounded by his giant pumpkins from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. There's something magical and cozy about fall, just like there's something magical and cozy about Harry Potter.

That's it! My 10 must-have fall items. Have you already snagged some of them, or do you have more to add? Come visit me on Instagram or leave a comment below.
